“You use spreadsheets everyday in your marketing practice. You already know sequel take a second second and look back at all the stuff you ve learned to work in spreadsheets. Basically already have all the fundamentals of being a technical marketer down. You already know how to work with formulas.

How to work with data and tables how to visualize that data that s really the meat of what being a technical marketer is all about you re just doing it in spreadsheets. The problem is spreadsheets are really only good for working with small data. So i m here to tell you that it s time to put down your spreadsheets and move into databases like bigquery. It does basically the exact same things that you re currently doing in spreadsheets just at infinite scale and infinite size ultimately what s important is not what tool you use spreadsheets databases.

Whatever the next thing that will come out next year. Is. But what you can t substitute for is the contextual knowledge that you ve picked up by actually doing your job your expertise is far more valuable than any individual tool. Let s walk through a few examples of analyses that we do in spreadsheets that we also do in sequel.

So you can see kind of compare and contrast. How are they different in sheets versus a database for seo for example. We do what s called a website quality audit in this we join together a bunch of different data sets google analytics search console links from a h refs crawl all that stuff right the bottom line is you re combining a bunch of data sets and that the key work to be done is joining them all together and we ve done this a lot in spreadsheets. You put each into a different tab and then you use vlookup formulas to join them all together this can really grind your sheets to a.

Halt if you re working with anything over 10000. Pages trust us. We ve gone through the pain on this now in bigquery. It s not really that much different instead of using a vlookup.

We just use a join statement to join all of those tables together sequel can handle that data sighs. No problem so for that seo audit. Often what we ll do is generate action recommendations kind of next steps to take for each page on your site. Now doing this in sheets.

We use an if statement so we write a really complex nested. If statement to say if traffic is this then do this action. If statements can nest. They can get really nasty and you know this if you ve worked with if statements and sheets before so we use an if statement and sheets in sequel.

Do that we do the exact same thing. Except you use case statements. Case statements are just much much easier to read they have the same you know if when then type of logic as an if statement does so if you can learn an if statement you can learn a case statement. So those two themes.

Joining data together and having some type of tagging or logic themes that you ll see repeated throughout any type of data analysis that you re doing and if you can learn those methods and sheets. Which i think you probably already have if you re watching this video you can learn those same methods easily in sequel. The fundamental reason. Why i really recommend making this jump.

Now is that the tools for getting data into a database like bigquery have gotten so much better over the last couple of years. So now you have tools like stitch. Five. Tran.

Funnel and even our own tool. Query..

Dot. Recipes. The table stakes for getting into this game. Have just gotten a lot lower the amazing thing about getting all of your data into a database and working in sequel is that in sheets.

You generally have a kind of siloed approach. You copy some type of template and you use it individually for each site that you work on but in a database you get all of your data across all of the sites or projects that you re working on in one database in one set of tables you can actually realize this far away dream of spending less time wrangling your data in spreadsheets and more time actually analyzing it you might be saying okay. That s wonderful. But how do i actually get started learning sequel.

The first thing to do is work on a data set that you use every day and preferably that you already have this kind of data analysis process figured out in spreadsheets that way you already have the raw data picked out you already have the kind of formulas. What s the the frosting. How do you put it together and you already have some kind of visualization that you want to end up with so to take your process in sheets and poured it into sequel. You want to break down three things.

And what you can do is swap out those three pieces one at a time so first how are you getting the raw data into bigquery are you going to use it to like stitch like our recipes tool or you can use funnel are you going to use some script that you a developer on your team already wrote the second thing to break down is what are your formulas in that analysis. In your spreadsheet. Doing are they joining data together with vlookup are they applying if statements to do some type of tagging on the data do you need to run just averages and counts and sums you know basic pivot table of arithmetic that you used may be a pivot table for in sheets. What do you need to do in sequel to match the job that you re doing in spreadsheets and three how are you going to present it ultimately.

It s really about hot swapping. Where are you reading that data between sheets and your database your end visualization ideally would look exactly the same no matter where the data is coming from i m here to tell you that if you know spreadsheets you already know sequel. So why not go for it and start working in databases ultimately having sequel on your resume will boost your hourly rate your salary however you get paid i guarantee it the dive into learning sequel in bigquery and actually getting started with building your bigquery data. Pipeline will have a bunch of links in the ght it in malibu.

The guy told me it was 25 years old i don t know if he was being serious and i go because i was so excited about something being older than me and now we grow up ntogether. It s really cool oh actually this is fun cause you really have nto water. These trees so i ll do this and i ll npretend. It s raining.

We don t have a lot of fun around here. Upbeat music. So this is the way to the bedroom. This is one of my favorite.

This is a shelby and sandy painting. My ex girlfriend got me this nand. It was really sweet cause. This was the view nwhere we had our first kiss and then this car was the ncar.

I drove out to la in so she had it painted and she surprised me and it was really fun and then here now that ni m not in a relationship. I had them make a new one nthat represents who i am now they made a brand new completely black and it s so glossy. It s reflective. They call it a black mirror and it s like one of those npieces where i feel like someone will come in and be nlike or someone will go i really really like it you could see yourself in it camera man pretty cool upbeat music.

So this is my bedroom. My friend reggie and my nassistant. Now natalie designed. They interior ndecorated.

The whole place so everything is thanks to them. I didn t give them any direction cause..

I have no artistic nvision whatsoever and i just said this is my favorite part it s my tv. I wasn t allowed to have a ntv in my room growing up so now that i have this nit s a complete game changer and look at this it s wherever if i m comin in sometimes ni ll have natalie my assistant just stand and she ll nknow i m coming home from a really long day nand as i m walking in she ll tilt it towards me nas. I m going to my bed. And that s why it s so ngood because it moves.

This is a really soft carpet. I usually don t allow shoes on it. But i know how americans nare they like having shoes in all kinds of household settings. So i m just walkin naround showin you guys that i m one of you guys.

When i m not i was born in slovakia nhere s my passport. This is my bed. I edit here a lot yeah not much goes on in here woman. What were you just editing.

I was editing a video laughing oh this is cool this is a baseball. I got to throw out the first pitch at the cubs game in chicago. I was super nervous for it but they let me keep this baseball upbeat music. This is my closet black is obviously my nfavorite color to wear all i have is black shirts.

I love chipotle and they nsent me a bunch of their hats. So it now looks like i work there. All the time. Which is great these are the only hats.

I wear my friend painted this this is on the ikea table. My friend is a psycho and njust recently. I noticed he wrote something on the back. It says how beep mysterious is this i have a feeling.

This is gonna help me in my life in 20 years. Okay david gasping. This is cartier. I don t nactually own cartier.

But when you go inside nand. You re really polite to the people they do nlet you borrow the bag and then i have this snapchat backpack box thudding n. David laughing. That s pretty much it for the closet.

I feel like we were in here for a while upbeat music. So this is my bathroom. There s not much goin on here s the toilet and then on this side. I was nlike really scared to open it did you see i was like n beep.

This is the toilet and then this is the shower. There s a little plant in nthere keep him nice and soaked. This is my shampoo of choice nand. It always has been it s suave kids.

It s tear free shampoo which i found out isn t tears you still cry when it gets in your eyes. It s tear free so it ndoesn t tear your hair..

It doesn t have knots in your hair. If you re trying to get rid of tears. This isn t the way to go. But if you want good smelling hair this nis still the way to go this is my bathtub.

I think ni ve used it four or five times and then there s a cool view nof. The outside from here. It s also a cool view from nthe outside to in here. If you re in the comcast building.

And you wanna. See me bathe. I ll make sure to open this for you great now. I can never bathe again.

Upbeat music. Right here is the office that we just transformed into a bedroom. It s pretty cool because it nhas this daylight thing to it it has a sunroof. I don t nknow what you call these i m seven years old and then these are my plaques nfor hitting one million on my channels.

Which is fun. I like this room upbeat music. This is the studio. I don t really use it for anything other than to say i have a studio.

When i bought this place it nwas like a movie theater room. But it s too small i feel nlike for a movie theater room. So we transformed it to a place where we can record our podcast. But we also never did that because it was just too professional and i d rather do it on my couch.

These are some pictures non the wall laughing. This is my friend jason that s nwho. I do the podcast with we taped him to the wall successfully that was a lot of fun this picture was from nwhen. I cut my hand open.

It was my favorite video. I ve ever filmed all my friends were nthere and we were having such a good time and we nwere all laughing about it. And it was a really stressful moment and it was made to be a lot of fun and that s what i really like upbeat music. This is the outdoors.

The view of the house nwas. The most important i fell like i m such a sucker for views the house itself could be an actual box. But if it has a really cool view. I m totally in love with it and this has a really really fun view you could see universal studios from here and the comcast building.

And me bathing. And it has real grass and nthere s a dumbass groundhog in here that s eating all of it here s his hole. And he ll come out and then when you try to talk nto him he ll bury himself. We don t negotiate with nterrorists around here so we re done communicating nwith this groundhog.

We re trying to build a pool here. I ve been saying that we re ntrying to build a pool here for the past year..

But it s not working. I didn t want you guys to come because the pool wasn t ready. But i also don t know if the show s gonna be around in 15 years so i m glad we re knocking it out now here s a ping pong table. I don t know i feel like it s got a really big back yard for california or for at least a hillside nhouse.

Which i really enjoy whoa. Who did these who made these no ones safe woman. David natalie. We get n stop stop.

It okay forget it stop n. All right guys. This is my grill water splashing nahh. This is a fire pit.

This is a npizza this is a skateboard. I didn t even know we had this upbeat music okay now we re gonna go nto the front of the house. This is where the cars are what else would be at nthe front of the house it feels so weird saying it but that s my ferrari that i got recently this is my favorite car it s my tesla it s my dream car there is no better car than a tesla it almost seems unfair to ncompare it to other cars. Because it s just totally different than anything i ve ever driven.

So you can walk up to the ncar and the door opens and the doors open in the nmost obnoxious way possible and it s amazing because it s an suv so i can seat all 10 of my friends this car is for six year nolds. Which is why it s great it has this whoopee cushion option. I can make people in nthe car fart farting. So depending on where they re sitting i can make it sound like they re farting.

I can also change their fart nfrom. A big one farting to a small one farting. It s beep great and then if you re every trying to get a certain person in the nmood you go down here you hit this fireplace option nand. A fireplace comes up sensual music and it actually shoots out heat the cool thing about this car is it receives updates njust like a phone would when you buy the car it doesn t have certain functions that it would later one of the cool surprises with nthis is christmas morning.

Elon tweeted. And he said n. And then everyone went to their cars. And this was the update christmas music doin .

It christmas music no. I have guests you can t do this yeah. It like has erectile dysfunction. I swear this has never nhappened before laughing.

It usually goes up i promise beep whatever. This is the car upbeat music. Thank you ab for coming by i had a lot of fun showing nyou guys. The house i ll see you guys later remember safety first.

I don t know why people ndon t wear seat belts see ya guys garbage cans thudding ” ..
