“Welcome back to consultants corner and today. Let s address a debate that you may may or may not have noticed going on between robert and myself as to whether should get printed materials to market one s business business. Cards brochures. Etc.
Do you don t you is it worth. It. The time and the money is it a waste of time and money and the answer is of course it depends. But really so we ve had this debate on and constantly a sort of it s it s one of the first things i did was to get printed business cards and then i made brochures he if you watch his videos he tends to say do that later do it at some point.
It s good to have but don t spend money on it upfront wait until you ve made money to spend on it. And really i think a lot of this can come down to what is it that you sell and how do you sell it and therefore what world are these printed materials play in you marketing and growing your business and here s the thing with robert and you know if the primary thing he s selling is translations you can build a portfolio of that online. So if you re selling something that is tangible in that sense. Yes you can build your portfolio you can build your reviews.
You can put those up on your prose. Comm profiles. All those online profiles etc and use that to market. What you do if what you sell are the ideas.
If your consultant in the more traditional sense and really what you sell are the ideas that are in your head. And how those are applied to your clients business. It s you can t just sort of build a portfolio with that yes you can build client get case studies testimonials etc. But it s and you know you can write papers.
You can do all sorts of things. But it s it s a bit more personal and adapted to each client. So what you re selling is really yourself you have to go out and build. We ve talked about this before builds that sort of know like trust continuum get people to know you then get them to like you then get them to trust you and once they trust you that is when you will be hired by them as in when they have a need for your services and essentially in this case.
What we re saying for your brain. So what does that mean it means that you are growing your business through networking through referrals word of mouth and through essentially being physically present in places and allowing people to get to know you and if that is what you re doing if you need to be physically present and pleases to a lot of people to you know you then get printed materials you have to have something to hand off you have to have a business card. If you have a brochure even better and yes it can be sleazy. But that just depends how you make it by sleazy.
I mean those people who walk in the room and are like hey i sell insurance here s my business card. If you ever need life insurance right so don t be that person. But you make a connection with somebody you start speaking and then hand them a business card something to remember you by something else is they might be able to take notes on it if you say something that you know they want to remember or just to sort of remember who you are factor. I do this i just realized.
I ve got this sort of sun glare on me apologies for that um. I do this when i meet somebody and i get their business card not always but often what i ll do especially if i know that i m about to go off and talk to somebody else i m not gonna have a chance to sit down and write this down immediately. Then i will take a quick note on the back of their business card. What happens is that ll sometimes then prompt them to do the same and with a business card.
They ve got some place to do it. And they ve got all your contact details. Something else once. If you re meeting people at events etc.
Once they get back to their desk. They ve got those business cards. It s it s a quick reminder of who you are because at the event. It s not just you right they ve got all sorts of things going on so then they get back to their desk.
And like oh. Yes. I remember meeting rebecca. There s a reminder.
They re more likely maybe to store your details. Because i ve got them there. It s okay let me put this in my contact database or save. This business card.
And that s why i see the brochure as well it s it frankly doesn t take much to make a good impression you can get these designed either easily you can get a professional designer or you can use free templates available online. There are a lot of resources to do this and then you can get them printed through anything like vista print or staples or all sorts of online services and of course. If you re using a designer. Then they will have their own resources that they can they can utilize or share with you so think about you know what s on your website.
Make sure that it s replicated both aesthetically and in terms of information and just get that on a brochure and sorry again for the glare. Again that s just something else that you can hand off to people to enforce sort of you know highlight the message that you want to get across and the same thing then they ve got that they look at it again and they re more likely to remember you and what you do especially if they re in an environment. Where they re meeting a lot of people as i say the reason. I say it doesn t take much to make a good impression.
It s because so as mentioned there are a lot of tools out there to do this. But what it shows to people is that you did take the time and effort and you ve laid it out. And you want people to remember you and you re really thinking about your business. And it just sort of shows.
I think that you re taking your business seriously and so that you take your work seriously. So it tends to have a good reaction to having that so these are all ways in which there s some ways in which having those physical materials really does support your business. They re not terribly expensive and that s why it s a fairly easy financial investment to make upfront even if you haven t got any clients. Yet you know so when you re just starting out it s it s it doesn t have to be an expensive thing to do the a couple things to note.
When you re doing your business cards for example. The think about the shape and the material so i mentioned people might like to take notes on your business cards so bear that in mind don t make it over laminated. I mean lamination is fine glosses fine. So long as people can still write on it kind of annoying.
If you re trying to take notes and it doesn t take also the shape. I if you can be creative with shapes fine. But when in doubt just get your standard business card shape. You don t know how people use these.
A leader as i said they want to take notes if it s small or some strange shape. They can t do that some people keep business cards. And if they want to put them into a business card booklet. If your business card is square or longer etcetera.
They re not going to be able to do that that you know so just as i say i mean if you ve got a reason for using a creative shape etc. Then fine. But when in doubt use the traditional shape and size standard materials get it nice and thick get proper paper. But but again something that people can write on and of course.
Easy to read. And don t try to put too much on your business card remember that as a reminder think of the purpose of it it s to make you look good make you look serious and a reminder of who you are and then just the direct information to as to you know how they can get more information about you or contact. You i have my business card right here. So let me show you mine is very simple like i like minimalist types of things so it s just my name and a title the type was always difficult.
I don t really like the job titles. So mine says outsource strategy development. Which is what i do so sort of what i do rather than what i am if that makes sense not so much a title and then my contact details. My url and the back is just my name so again very simple.
But just sort of it has the basic information. There and i think of this as i say it s something to remember me by and their plan. There s plenty of space there on the back for people to take notes if that s what they like to do with business cards so that s my two cents on getting printed materials. I do also have a brochure.
I might splice this and show that to you in just a second it s across the room. So so i ll show that to you in just a second so that the the the point being it it has certainly served me well and being able. And i don t give a brochure out to everybody that i meet it s not always relevant again. It s you know don t become that annoying person that s just pushing your materials on people.
But if i m having a conversation with somebody and we talk about something that s on the brochure. They re asking me specific questions. And i can say here you know i ll answer. The question and say here.
This is something with that same information or a bit more information for you to remember me by a token of our time. Together and and of course. Contact details and and sort of how we can work together. I like having that physical thing as i say it s been well received in the context in which i ve used it and it s i find it necessary because because of that portfolio thing.
It s harder to do in and they say of course you can do case studies at cetera. It s just not the same thing is actually putting up your designs and translations or that sort of very physical. Very tangible thing that you ve done for the four clients. So yeah face to face networking use your printed materials to your advantage.
If you re doing any sort of speaking or presentations. Etc. Then most definitely have printed materials and honestly just it s also just safer to have you don t really want to be in a situation where somebody says well do you have a card. So i can you know remember to get in touch with you later.
And you have to say no. It s always a little bit awkward. Frankly so try to avoid that yeah. Robert has a different view as i said he doesn t say that you don t need printed materials.
But he tends to say it s not a priority get them later. But but i think it does depend on really what you re doing to market yourself. And so where those initial resources should be spent and then i think we agree in terms of what you need as all of your resources over time. It s more just a question of how you prioritize so that is my defense of printed materials.
Give me one second and i will get that brochure okay so in effect. I have two brochures here is the one that i give to clients. It will recognize the cover image. That s the cover in two images that i use all the time and then the information on the inside has my five strategies.
That is what is on my website and then it s additional quarter. How to hire me how it is that i work so people know what they re getting into. I get a testimonial. I put a testimonial on the back of then of course.
My contact details and a mention of my newsletter. So that is the brochure that i give to prospective clients. When i do speaking engagements. This is what i bring so on and so forth.
But i have another one this is the brochure and the design is completely different. It was done at a different time. But i try to keep a constant with that coffee which i just really like reflective of how i work there s often coffee in the morning sun and a notebook so on my desk. But this is what i give to people who are potential business partners or referral partners.
So this isn t so much about what i do for my clients. But rather how i work in sync with other people who serve my same clients so i m thinking about when my clients they use me. But they also will need other service providers. And that s a list of some of the services that they might be getting done out sourced and and so.
The service providers who could realistically be referring clients to me. Because we work with the same clients and then inside against kind of that breakdown of you know this is what our clients do this is what i do for them. And this is what you my referral partner do for them. So i actually have these two different brochures that i can use in these two different contexts and two different types of contacts so printed materials there you go make up your own mind decide what you need and what works for you and as i say you can t spend a lot of money on them you don t have to you can diy.
It completely you could get a designer plenty of options out there to get it done the way that makes you most happy that s it for today. As always comments experiences and questions in the comment section. Below. If you liked the video.
