“Interwebs welcome to let s fix computers today. We re starting. A new mini series series about board repair. So the purpose of this series is to provide the answer where do i start with board repair.

So. If you have a laptop that is not starting has no power. What other strange falls down to liquid damage or what you know to be a fault with the main circuit board in the laptop. So the motherboard or logic board and this series should give you a rough idea on how you approach this problem now.

It s worth noting that this is not a master class. We want to learn board repair it takes time at a lot of hours of research and quite often a lot of hours of watching other videos online about it however at least. If you re interested in the subject and you just want to get the basics in a quick bite sized amount then this is where you want to be so to get started with our series. We re going to be taking a look at this board.

This is an 800 2530 logic board from a 2009 13 inch. Macbook. Pro. So apple laptops are really good candidates for board repair because their boards are very well documented these schematics and board views are widely available online.

If you know where to look and as a result of that it makes a decent. It makes deciphering these very straightforward so we re going to be taking a look at this board. Which is currently in working condition. I m going to be reading this board with a couple of very straightforward problems and then demonstrating how we can discover that problem.

And why that fault has prevented the board from working so part of this will include looking at how power rails work how data lines work. And how missing one or the other affects the functionality of the device and once we ve got through this hopefully you ll be able to start looking at logic that logic boards and motherboards alike and seeing the patterns in how they re built and how they re designed once you ve got that in your head. You can actually start looking at these and instead of seeing it as just a single unit. You ll start seeing it as a network of smaller components all on the same motherboard.


So let s get started so the basic equipment that we re going to be using on our repairs. And our diagnostics are a two in one soldering station and a multimeter. So let s start with the multimeter first my multimeter is a basic flute knockoff. These are available on ebay for like 20 pounds.

This is a vici that s vi ci vc 99. And yeah. It s basically a flute knockoff and these things are very cheap and they do the job you can buy an expensive multimeter. If you want and it will probably give you frakking more accuracy and slightly faster readings.

However if you re getting started then a cheap multimeter will do just fine. However i do recommend buying a set of fine tip probes for it because they do make probing at the smallest circuit. Much much easier as you can see here here s a comparison between the standard ones that came with my multimeter and the fine tip ones that i purchased for about 5 pounds on ebay to go with it because i have a fluke knockoff. The connections are fairly universal and anything that fits a fluke will fit this multimeter.

Then the soldering rework station. I use a lot of people doing this will have more expensive equipment than this however again for a starter or for someone who s dealing with a fairly low volume of repairs. One of these two in one kits. That cost about between 60 to a 60 to 100 pounds on ebay will do just fine.

So we have a soldering iron here. Which is approximately. It s about 17 watts or so and it has variable temperature. So we can set our temperature on the dial.

Which is very important and i ll cover that in a moment then in addition to that we also have the hot air side of the station. Which again has variable temperature. And that is this fella here. And this will belt out a stream of hot air at the temperature.


We dictate. Which allows us to reflow solder connections and the area that we re pointing out now the important difference between the hot air station and the soldering line is the hot air station will heat up an area so it allows us to meet up take it up multiple pins at the same time whereas the soldering iron limits us to only what we can touch one thing at a time so you ll see as we work on the device that both the tools have their place correct use and i will go over roughly the pros and cons of each one and how to get started with them and a rough guide on how to set up your station as well now using tools from more expensive brands like jaco wella. Quick. And so on will yield better results.

You will find that the job is easier with the more expensive tools. However. We are talking about a price separation of rather than paying somewhere between sixty and a hundred pounds for your rework station. You ll probably be paying closer to five hundred pounds for your equipment.

So for some people who are going to be doing this all day every day that is an absolute worthwhile investment that they should take up without hesitation. But for someone who only looks at one or two boards a week with intent to actually solder on them that can be quite a steep investment so you should weigh up the pros and cons of the cheap equipment versus the expensive equipment and decide to yourself my recommendation is to start out with something cheap and decide whether this is for you or not and then if you start gaining momentum agura repairs go ahead and invest in a better equipment okay. So let s have a look at the software that we need to do this job. So this is the point where we need schematics now.

There are no official downloads for the vast majority of schematics on the vast majority of circuit boards. These are the original engineer s diagrams for these things that are not officially released by anyone. However if you do some searching around you can find them now. I m not going to provide you with links.

Please do not ask me for links. Please do not tell ask me for download links. I cannot supply you with that. But what i can tell you is that if you do a search for the model number of the board that you re working on plus.

The word schematic you will probably find a download link for what you re looking for you need a pdf file for the schematic itself and you need a board of you file. That is usually a dot b. Rd. File.


And those two together are the two files that you need so. Let s have a look at the two of those so. The schematic looks something like this it s a pdf file that will be filled with lots and lots of circuit. Diagrams and circuit layouts that look just like this.

Now you can view this with just your browser with chrome or or edge. If you want however. I recommend having a proper pdf viewer for this because these files are a bit large. And it s very handy tab distance zooming functionality.

And so on and so forth. I just use adobe reader d. Seen for this you can use another one. If you want it s up to you now.

The board view file you will need a bit of software called open board view now this is a free download. You can download this for free. Do a google search for it and you ll find it very quickly so with this now. I m going to open up the board view to the circuit board that we re working on so.

In this case. I have an 8 to 0 25. 30. So.

Let me see there it is there is my board view far and as you can see this gives us something that looks a lot like the board. We re working on so you can see we ve got the connectors down the left there are our connectors now this obviously does not show the family heatsink. Which we ve got attached here. But you can see that we have the correct layout for the board now i can zoom in on this and i can also flip it over and look at the other side of the board and look at that and at any given time.


I can click on any one of these components. Let s click on this thing. Here. And this tells us that this is c7 408.

So capacitor number seven 408. This will correspond to another place on at the schematic. So for example. Let s take c7 408 and search for it in our schematic c7 408 search.

And there is c7 408. So as you can see this is part of whatever. This circuit is we ll talk more about identifying circuits in a bit. But for now as you can see that is the relationship here is the circuit diagram for the area.

We re working on and c7 for 8. That little capacitor there corresponds with this component. There and if i turn my board over and look at it very carefully i can figure out this c7 408 is this guy here so that is how i m discovering what components are and where they relate to you on the schematic. So as we get into this you ll pick up more on how to do this yourself.

It s fairly obvious once we get into it and we ll talk more about what the components do as we go that concludes the introduction section of this series so links are in the description and on screen for any references that i ve used along with more videos in this series.
