In Sickbay, the Doctor picks up his tricorder to scan Seven, as part of her routine check-up.

Doctor: "I hear there was some excitement this morning. When I started helping you improve your social skills, I'm fairly certain I didn't include a boxing lesson. You weren't hurt, were you?"

Seven: "No." Her voice is subdued. Doctor: "Still a bit tense?" Seven: "Perhaps."

Doctor: "I understand the burden you carry - constantly being obligated to deal with those who fall short of excellence. I often find my own patience being tested by someone like Mr Kovin. Of course, I generally respond with a devastating quip rather than a left hook. We must both accept the fact that very few lifeforms will ever meet our high standards. So, when you get irritated, just try to be tolerant, and remember they can't help being what they are. Hmm, I'm reading some increased engrammatic activity, and your adrenalin levels are slightly elevated."

Seven: "What does that indicate?" Doctor: "It's consistent with a state of heightened tension. Lie down and I'll run some scans." She gets onto the biobed. "In a typical human I would consider this a mood swing, but with your unique physiology I'd like to rule out the possibility of a chemical imbalance."

He activates a control to close the 'clamshell' containing diagnostic instruments over her.

The 'clamshell' closing over her suddenly disturbs and frightens her and she gasps - she has a sudden memory flash of something else, a cage-like restraint, closing her over in a similar way!

Doctor: "Have you been experiencing any other symptoms? Headaches, disorientation?" Seven, very tense: "No." Doctor: "Physiological scans seem normal."

Holding an instrument in his hand, he approaches her head. "I'm going to check your Borg implants now."

The Doctor's approach holding an instrument invokes another memory flash, this time of someone with malevolent intent approaching her with a medical instrument. She panics.

Doctor: "Seven?" Seven is breathing heavily, frightened: "Let me out." Doctor: "I will. Stay calm."

Seven: "No more procedures." Doctor, surprised: "Alright-" He presses a control and the 'clamshell' opens. As it does so, she grasps it, desperate to get out.

Seven: "Stay away! You mustn't do this!"

Doctor, puzzled and concerned: "Do what? Seven, what are you so afraid of?"

"I don't know." Seven is frightened as much because she does not know.

Voyager orbiting the Entharan planet.

In his office, the Doctor is explaining the situation to Janeway. Doctor: "She experienced an episode of acute anxiety with all the trimmings: intense apprehension, shortness of breath, dizziness. I finally managed to sedate her." He takes her into the medical lab. He displays on the monitor an animated internal scan of Seven's brain. Janeway: "Could this have been caused by her cortical implants?" Doctor: "I don't think so. I think the problem has to do with memory suppression. I've detected a high concentration of biogenic amines in Seven's hippocampus, a substance I haven't noticed before. It's blocking several portions of her memory centre." Janeway: "Do you know where it came from?" Doctor: "No, but it seems to be dissipating. Seven's unusual behaviour may be the result of the blocked memories beginning to surface, memories which she can't identify yet." As they talk, they go back into the main Sickbay area. Janeway: "Can you treat her?" Doctor: "Treatment would involve integrating the repressed memories into Seven's consciousness. I may be able to use a standard therapeutic regression technique." Janeway: "I wasn't aware that you were programmed for psychotherapeutic capabilities." Doctor: "I wasn't, but in the absence of a ship's counsellor I've been developing a psychiatric subroutine to add to my program." Smugly: "I'll be even more valuable to you than I am now." Janeway, giving him permission to proceed: "Keep me informed, Doctor."

The Doctor is with Seven in Cargo Bay 2. She is in her Borg alcove.

Doctor: "A Jungian therapist would attempt to retrieve unconscious memories by exploring synchronicities in recent events. On the other hand, Amanin of Betazed would argue that a combination of sensory isolation and focussed breathing techniques would be more effective. I've integrated the finer points of both to create my own approach to memory reconstruction." Seven: "What does this approach involve?" Doctor: "First, putting you at ease by performing the treatment here, in your own environment. Once the cortical probes have reinforced the neural pathways, I'll use a directed imagery technique to guide you through the regression." Seven: "You may proceed." Doctor: "Please, close your eyes. Clear your mind. Try not to think or to analyse."

Seven: "My mind is now clear." Doctor: "Seven, this isn't an exercise in efficiency. Close your eyes." She does so. "Breathe deeply." She complies. "Now concentrate on the sound of my voice. Let go of the present, leave the cargo bay behind, allow yourself to drift. Describe the first image that enters your mind."

Seven (remembering): "A medical tricorder, duritanium casing, 7.6 centimetres by 9.8 centimetres by 3.2 centimetres, alphanumeric display."

The Doctor monitors her brain activity.

Doctor: "That's enough. So, you're in Sickbay. How does the tricorder make you feel?" Seven (remembering): "It disturbs me." Doctor: "Why does it disturb you?" Seven (remembering): "I'm afraid it will hurt me."

Doctor: "Is there anything else there that causes you to anticipate pain?" Seven (remembering): "The diagnostic bed. It's closing around me." Doctor: "You feel restrained, confined." Seven (remembering): "Yes, I'm uneasy." Doctor: "About what?"

Seven (remembering): "It's Kovin." Doctor: "What is he doing?"

Seven remembers an alien restrained on another bed.

Seven (remembering): "He's restraining me. I want to get away from him but I can't."

Seven (remembering): "Kovin's using some kind of instrument on me."

Seven's eyes fling open and she gasps. Doctor: "Seven?" Seven: "I didn't recall this before." Doctor: "Recall what?" Seven: "Kovin - he, he performed a surgical procedure on me. He extracted Borg technology from my body. He violated me."
