SUMMARY: Admiral Kathryn Janeway travels in time from a nightmare future to bring ship and crew home early, but the might of the Borg blocks the way. The news media report that it is the tenth anniversary of the U.S.S. Voyager's triumphant return to Earth after 23 years in the Delta Quadrant (hence it is 2404). Footage is shown of the celebrations that accompanied the Starship's return. A white-haired and care-worn Kathryn Janeway reminisces thoughtfully. In 2404, Kathryn Janeway is a Starfleet Admiral, Harry Kim is a Captain, Tom Paris is a full-time holonovelist, and the Doctor is married to a human woman called Lana and has named himself "Joe" after her grandfather. At a reunion party in her apartment, Admiral Janeway talks with B'Elanna Torres, who is now has the post of Federation Liaison to the Klingon High Council, about arranging a political favour for a Klingon named Korath. Commander Reginald Barclay, whose efforts helped speed Voyager's return home, proposes a toast. Admiral Janeway and Captain Kim Paris, Torres, Joe, Lana Reg Barclay proposes a toast Ensign Paris on audio-visual link on the Admiral's computer Later, the Admiral is a guest lecturer in Barclay's Starfleet Academy class about the Borg. When a cadet asks a question about Seven, Admiral Janeway evades the subject. She is pulled away from class to her office where she receives a message from Ensign Miral Paris, the daughter of Torres and Paris. Miral reports on a secret mission to arrange some sort of exchange between the Admiral and Korath. Admiral Janeway stops to say farewell to Tuvok at his hospital room. He is suffering from a neurological disorder that has destroyed his mind, telling him she may never come back, and leaving him the gift of a picture of the Voyager crew. She then has the Doctor over to her apartment and asks him to procure for her a supply of chronexaline, an experimental drug that can protect biomatter from tachyon radiation, for "classified" reasons. She arranges to obtain some downloaded information and a shuttle from Commander Barclay. Finally she visits Chakotay's gravesite, promising that when she has finished her mission, things will be better for everyone. Janeway says farewell to Tuvok Chakotay's grave false labour 26 years earlier, in 2377, when Voyager is still in the Delta Quadrant, the heavily pregnant Torres is having repeated occurrences of false labour, which is quite common in Klingon pregnancies. Seven and Chakotay are developing a serious romance. Tuvok is concerned when he is defeated by Icheb in Kal-toh, so he visits the Doctor and learns his neurological condition is slowly deteriorating. In the Astrometrics Lab, Seven plays Kadis-Kot with Neelix via an audio-visual link. It is a regular arrangement begun since Neelix left Voyager to live with Dexa, and he confides that he is thinking of asking her to marry him. They are interrupted when astrometric sensors detect high neutrino emissions indicating a wormhole. Tuvok and Kim play kal-toh Neelix and Seven chat while playing kadiskot Seven later briefs the crew that the centre of a nearby nebula may contain hundreds of wormholes, any of which could lead to the Alpha Quadrant. In 2404, the Doctor visits Tuvok, who has become increasingly agitated about the disappearance of Admiral Janeway, convinced that she is never coming back. Curious, the Doctor visits Commander Barclay to get in touch with Admiral Janeway, and Barclay says simply that she is out of town. But when Barclay starts stammering, which he has not done in years, the Doctor knows he is concealing something. Tuvok expresses his concern Barclay stammers Meanwhile, Admiral Janeway has taken the shuttle to a moon where she meets up with Miral Paris, who introduces her to the House of Korath. After dismissing the Ensign, Janeway meets with Korath, who has something for her but demands information on her shuttle's shield modifications. The Admiral refuses to go beyond the original terms of their agreement, so she is shown out. Janeway to Kim: "You may be the Captain someday, but not today." In 2377, Voyager enters the murky nebula and barely misses colliding with a Borg cube. The Borg Queen is alerted to the incident. Captain Janeway orders the ship out of the nebula, refusing to go back despite Ensign Kim's appeal not to give up on those wormholes - she points out he is not a captain yet. the Borg Queen is aware of the near-collision of a Borg cube with Voyager Later, Seven asks the Doctor to perform a procedure he devised to remove an emotional failsafe device in her cortical node, in order that she can safely pursue more intimate relationships, specifically with Chakotay. The procedure will require one treatment only, in the form of microsurgery. Seven's and Chakotay's romantic feelings for each other grow deepr the Doctor agrees to remove Seven's Borg emotional failsafe device In 2404, Admiral Janeway tells Korath she has reconsidered his offer. She will give him the shield emitter, but first she has to inspect the device he is offering. Korath allows her to scan the device, whereupon Janeway attaches a transport enhancer to the device and beams it and herself to the shuttle. The enraged Korath pursues her and opens fire, but the Admiral deploys a new armour technology around the shuttle that absorbs the phaser blasts. She jumps to warp and escapes. Admiral Janeway scans Korath's device Korath and guards Janeway's shuttle deploys armour Kim: "You're sure I can't talk you out of this? Right, stupid question." When she arrives at her destination, she is met by the Federation Starship U.S.S. Rhode Island, commanded by Captain Kim. He orders her to stand down. Kim has learned of her plan from the Doctor, who coaxed it out of Barclay, but Janeway insists the consequences are too great if she does not follow through. She asks him to trust her judgement one last time. Kim helps her prepare Korath's device, which is installed on top of the shuttle. It is a chrono-deflector. It will burn itself out with one use, but Admiral Janeway already assumed this would be a one-way trip. Unable to talk her out of the scheme, she and Kim have a brief and moving farewell, and he beams back to the Rhode Island. Admiral Janeway activates the chrono-deflector. Two Klingon ships decloak and begin firing, and she is unable to deploy the ablative armor. The Rhode Island comes back and distracts the Klingons while she activates a tachyon pulse. the Admiral's shuttle is pursued and attacked by Klingons then U.S.S. Rhode Island appears and drives them off In 2377, Seven and Chakotay are having a romantic moment and kiss for the first time, when they are interrupted by a summons to the Bridge. Some sort of temporal rift is forming in front of the ship, and Klingon weapons fire is being detected. But then a Federation vessel comes through the rift and hails Voyager. Captain Janeway sees the older version of herself on the viewscreen, ordering her to emit an anti-tachyon pulse from the deflector to close the rift before the Klingons come through. When she demands to know what is happening, the Admiral pulls rank and makes it an order. The Captain hesitantly fulfills that order and seals the rift. Admiral Janeway says she has come to bring Voyager home. What no one realises is that the Borg Queen is monitoring her transmission. the chrono-deflector opens a rift in time and space, and the Admiral's shuttle heads into it Janeway is hailed by.....Janeway the Borg Queen is monitoring the transmission End of Episode 171. Start of Episode 172. Admiral Janeway beams aboard Voyager and meets her younger self, and is moved to see a healthy Tuvok and Chakotay again. In Janeway's Ready Room, the Admiral reveals to the Captain that Voyager did eventually make it back to Earth after another 16 years, and the ship became a museum on the grounds of the Presidio. But the Admiral came to tell Captain Janeway to take Voyager back to the nebula as a shortcut home, using technology she brought to get past the Borg. The Captain wonders why she would want to tamper with the timeline, but the Admiral asks for her trust, citing the Temporal Prime Directive. Time has changed the Admiral in subtle ways. One is that she no longer drinks coffee. In Sickbay, the Doctor confirms that the Admiral is genetically identical to the Captain, but 26 years older. He has also detected an implant in her brain, which the Admiral reveals the Doctor himself invented in the future to allow her to pilot a vessel with a neural interface. Then Seven enters, to an emotional greeting from the Admiral. Seven reports that the armour and weapons technology on the shuttle can be adapted for Voyager, and the Captain orders it done. the Doctor confirms the Admiral's identity Janeway is moved when  Seven enters the room equipment is installed on Voyager's hull The crew busily upgrade the ship with the futuristic technology, and feel optimistic they might actually make it home this time. When Seven takes a break to regenerate, she is visited in her mind by the Borg Queen, who warns her not to let Voyager return to the nebula or it will be destroyed. Seven wakes up violently in her sparking alcove and, upon being cared for by the Doctor, reports the Borg Queen's warning to the two Janeways. The Admiral insists the Borg are 30 years behind compared to the technology and tactical data she has brought, so the Captain maintains course for the nebula. the Borg Queen "visits" Seven the "visit" is discussed When Voyager approaches the murky nebula, Captain Janeway orders the anti-Borg armour deployed, and the ship's hull is completely covered. Three Borg cubes engage the starship, but their weapons fire is repelled by the armour. They scan the ship, then focus their fire on a specific section of the armor which weakens it. Voyager responds with the launch of transphasic torpedoes, which completely obliterate the cubes with only one or two shots each. Voyager then finds the centre of the nebula. There the crew are surprised to see a massive Borg structure. Admiral Janeway orders Paris to enter an aperture in the structure, but Captain Janeway belays that order until she gets an explanation. Seven reveals the structure is a transwarp hub, one of only six in the galaxy. Angered that the Admiral did not tell her about this, the Captain orders the ship out of the nebula. When the Admiral tries to pull rank, the Captain says this is her vessel, and so Voyager leaves the nebula. Voyager enters the nebula and is impervious to attack by Borg cubes transphasic torpedoes destroy the enemy the transwarp hub Astrometrics Lab The crew learn more about the Borg's significant tactical advantage. One transwarp hub alone connects with thousands of transwarp conduits with endpoints in all four quadrants, allowing the Borg Collective to deploy vessels almost anywhere in the galaxy within minutes. This hub exits only in the Delta Quadrant, with only the exit aperture in the Alpha Quadrant. Captain Janeway wants to know how to destroy it. The crew determine that the structure is supported by a series of interspatial manifolds. If enough of the manifolds are disabled, theoretically the hub would collapse. The shielding for those manifolds is regulated from the central nexus by the Queen. But Admiral Janeway strongly objects to any attempt to destroy the hub. She insists on taking Voyager home before the Borg Collective can counteract the 25th century armour and weapons. The Captain takes the Admiral aside, and tells her she wonders how she got so cynical, arguing that they have a chance to save millions of lives. The Admiral reminds her of the decision that got her ship stranded in the first place, putting the lives of strangers (the Ocampa) ahead of her own crew. The Captain is willing to make the same kind of decision, but then the Admiral tells her that Seven is going to die, and that her husband, Chakotay, will never be the same after that, and neither will Janeway. Along with 22 other casualties, Tuvok will succumb to a degenerative neurological condition that he has not told her about. She can prevent all that and get home today safe and sound. the two Janeways discuss and argue Captain Janeway approaches Tuvok about his condition, and learns that he can be cured only by a mind-meld with a member of his own family. There are none of his family in the Delta Quadrant. But he asserts that he would rather destroy the hub than save himself, and quotes Ambassador Spock's wisdom: "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few." Even Seven refuses to take the Admiral's side. The Admiral is forced to reconsider when she witnesses the senior staff making a toast "to the journey", the sentiment being, as expressed by Kim on everyone's behalf, that the destination is not what is important but the journey, and that they would rather their journey take longer if they can accomplish something they believe in. Kim says there are no other people he would rather make the journey with. Their solidarity moves Admiral Janeway. Seven and the Admiral disagree the senior officers toast: "To the journey!" The Admiral talks with the Captain. The latter believes they can both destroy the hub and get home in the process. Buoyed by optimism, the Admiral decides to take up drinking coffee again, as a kind of last supper. the two Janeways see eye to eye at last The Captain says farewell to the Admiral, giving her a hypospray injection. The Admiral sets off in her shuttle for the transwarp hub. Using a neural interface, the Admiral enters the mind of the Borg Queen and tries to make a deal to see Voyager safely back to the Alpha Quadrant, in exchange for her information on the transphasic torpedoes. But while the Admiral negotiates, the Borg are triangulating her physical location. The Queen detects the Admiral's shuttle, beams her over, and injects her with assimilation tubules while Voyager enters one of the transwarp hub's apertures. As the Admiral is assimilated, the Borg Queen orders vessels to intercept Voyager. the Admiral's shuttle leaves Voyager and a short time later enters the Borg transwarp hub Too late, she realises that she no longer has control over the Borg. The newly assimilated Admiral has released a neurolytic pathogen into the Borg Collective, designed to bring chaos to order. the Borg Queen assimilates the Admiral the Queen realises she has lost control of the Borg While in a transwarp corridor, Voyager launches its transphasic weapons to collapse the transwarp hub. The Borg Queen, meanwhile, begins to lose parts of her own body as her Unicomplex begins to crumble in a series of explosions. However, there is one Borg sphere that still responds to her commands and she despatches it in pursuit of Voyager. The Queen knows that if the Admiral and Voyager are destroyed, none of this will happen. the Borg Unicomplex starts to explode In 2377, at the Pathfinder Project at Starfleet Headquarters in the Alpha Quadrant, Admiral Paris and Barclay detect a transwarp aperture opening up less than a light-year from Earth. Fearing a Borg invasion every Starship in the sector is ordered to converge. In the collapsing transwarp corridor, a Borg sphere bears down on Voyager as its anti-Borg armour begins to fail. Janeway adjusts Voyager's heading so that the sphere enters the Alpha Quadrant, fires transphasic torpedoes, and then, from the torpedoes and weapons fire from the Starfleet ships, the sphere explodes in a spectacular fireball. Voyager, unharmed, is revealed in the debris field. Admiral Paris welcomes the crew home just as his granddaughter (Miral) is born in Sickbay. Paris is dismissed from duty so that he can meet his new daughter. Captain Janeway orders Chakotay to take the helm and set a course for home. The Starfleet armada then escorts the long-lost Voyager towards Earth for a triumphant homecoming. alarmed, Admiral Paris and Lt. LT. PARIS: I left it in that nebula and I'm not going back for it. ENSIGN KIM: Don't you want to find a way home? LT. PARIS: I am home, Harry.    ADMIRAL JANEWAY: I'm remembering a young Ensign who wanted to fly into a Borg-infested nebula, just to explore the remote possibility that we might find a way home. CAPTAIN KIM: If I remember correctly, you stopped me. ADMIRAL JANEWAY: We didn't know then what we know now.    ENSIGN KIM: ....when I think about everything we've been through together, maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey. If that journey takes a little longer so we can do something we all believe in, I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with. LT. PARIS: To the journey.    ADMIRAL JANEWAY TO CAPTAIN JANEWAY: I took a lot of risks. I'd been so determined to get this crew home for so many years that I think I forgot how much they loved being together, and how loyal they were to you. It's taken me a few days to realise it. This is your ship, your crew, not mine.
